Ferritin is a protein that stores iron in the body. The amount of ferritin reflects the amount of iron stored in the body. Ferritin levels decline earlier than hemoglobin levels and, thus, the determination of ferritin plays a crucial role in the early detection of iron deficiency anemia. The cause of the iron deficiency should, however, always be investigated. If the test result is negative, i.e. the ferritin level is less than 30 ng/ml, consulting a physician is recommended.
